A Brief History of Fermat's Last Theorem

Careful guys, this one gets pretty maths-y. Well we say that, there are hardly any equations here.

As all stories should, let's start with Pythagoras. It was a sunny day in Ancient Greece...
Nah, on second thoughts, let's not. Big Bang Theory already took that one. Anyway, a long time ago, in a country far, far...
Hang on. No, Star Wars had that...

Anyway. Greece. Home of Heracles and hummus. And someone who may or may not have been a dude called Pythagoras, in his almighty (possibly bearded) wisdom, decided that right-angled triangles should be easier to understand. With perhaps the most well known mathematical formula of all time: a squared + b squared = c squared. (Blogger doesn't allow for superscripts, so sentences will have to do, get used to it)
You all remember this from GCSE, right? You will be tested on it.
In the example above, the values of a, b and c are 3, 4 and 5, the first set of whole numbers that this theorem works for. But there are an infinite number of solutions to this equation, so 3-4-5 is nothing special.

Of course, there's no reason whatsoever to stick to just whole numbers... unless you happen to be a number theorist, a strange bunch of mathematicians that spend their time obsessing over whole numbers. If it ain't an integer, they don't wanna know.

But let's get back to the story at hand. Pythagoras (or maybe some other Greek dude/girl, no-one's quite sure really) devised this triangle thing, and everyone was happy for about 200 years. Then a guy called Diophantus, who is much less known outside of the world of mathematics, wrote a book called Arithmetica. While writing up Pythagoras' theorem, Diophantus (or maybe someone earlier than him, seriously this happened thousands of years ago, stop expecting perfect historical accuracy) said to himself, "Well, why do we have to stick with using squared? What about cubed, or to the power of four? What about ANY power larger than two? Are there any numbers that work like that?"

No-one answered him. Mostly because he was probably sat alone in a room writing his book and no-one heard him, but still. Taking a few weeks off from writing, he had a go and couldn't think of any solutions to this equation, written out as a^n + b^n = c^n for some n>2. So, in his book, he wrote that this equation had no whole number solutions.

The problem? He couldn't explain why. And saying you can't do something and giving up isn't proof. It's like saying humans can't survive without air and then NOT strangling a person to prove it? Maybe? I dunno. And so, for a thousand years, mathematicians tried to figure out a proof for this problem. And quite frankly, checking every combination of integers to see if one works takes a little too long. As in, if you'd started counting at the dawn of time, you might have made it about 0% of the way through by now. Cos there's a looooot of integers, and a looooot of possible n's to check them for.

So, people sort of got bored, called it impossible to prove, and moved on. Until, in 17th Century France, a dude called Pierre de Fermat (who we know a lot about due to it being so recent. And no, he definitely didn't have a beard. At least, not in his Wikipedia portrait), who was a lawyer by day and a number-crunching, crime-fighting, maths wizard by night (except he probably fought crime as a lawyer too, so that's what he did from lunch to early evening), was flicking through his own copy of Arithmetica when he spotted this equation. Having a stab at it, he did some quick mental arithmetic, came to a conclusion, and wrote on the edge of the book, "I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this margin is too narrow to contain."

And then he died.
Wonderful.

Well, it was 30 years later that he died, but he never actually wrote down the proof that he claimed to have found. After the funeral, which probably consisted of a quiet ceremony and a much less quiet reception, Fermat's son Clement-Samuel, came across his father's notes, and subsequently republished them as that year's Christmas best-seller. Seriously, this was huge in the maths community (which is small, secluded and somewhere in Berkshire), and every number theorist in the world tried to find Fermat's solution as their own.

And... no-one did. A lot of people said that we just couldn't understand the maths that Fermat had thought up. A few said that Fermat must have been mistaken. And a couple just thought he was leaving a huge trollface in the middle of his textbook. Who knows?

Fast forward another 300 or so years. It's the 1960's. By now, people have devised ways to prove the theorem in bits and pieces, but no general solution exists. And in steps a 10 year old kid called Andrew Wiles. Reading a textbook on his way home from school, Wiles comes across Fermat's Last Theorem and, as all good mathematicians do, becomes obsessed with solving it. Showing it to his teachers, family and even a guy in the street called Gerald, none of them could explain to him how a theorem so simple to describe hadn't yet been proved. Except Gerald, who, other than being a mathematical genius and world-renown gymnast, was most likely made up. By us. Just now.

As most ten year olds do, Wiles grew up, went to University and attained a Ph.D. in mathematics (although a lot of 10 year olds get their degrees in other subjects). Starting a research grant in the mid-80's, he and a group of number theorists used a lot of time, effort and complicated maths to figure out a proof. But after a year, they hadn't made much progress. Despite this, Wiles continued with his work alone, in almost complete secrecy (he told his wife and that was it), continuing for 6 years to find this general proof.

And he got one. In 1993, Wiles published a paper which definitively proved that Fermat's Last Theorem was, in fact, true.

And then in August 1993, someone spotted the error he'd made.
Oops.

Wiles was, as is to be expected, a little discouraged by this. 7 years of his own work had been based on a flawed bit of maths. Disappointed is a bit of an understatement for this.

But, being British (and a mathematician), Wiles didn't give up. Devoting his entire researching timetable to the problem he worked for over a year to rectify his error. In time, he came to realise that the error, although incorrect, was a crucial part of his argument. He couldn't simply remove the error and call it a day. It seemed that the end had come.

Until, in 1994, on the verge of defeat and looking at his working one last time, he noticed a way around. A way to avoid the error entirely, which was both simple and valid. Writing this solution, Wiles was finally able to call it the finished article. His published findings were scrutinised, verified and accepted by the mathematics community. Finally, Fermat's Last Theorem, first proposed by Diophantus two thousand years previously, had a full working proof.

*fireworks, cheering crowds, etcetera*

So there you have it. A very short summary of one of the most interesting problems in all of mathematics. So simple to state even a 10 year old can understand it, but so difficult to solve that the greatest mathematicians of the age for two thousand years were stumped. Goes to show that all it takes to solve a several millennia old problem is one British dude in his mid forties. Words to live by, right?

The Year is 125 AD

and Stokes is Going on an Adventure

And so by the request of Stokes, a post summarising what he got up to today in an RPG we've been playing!

With helpful pictures.

BUT FIRST SOME CONTEXT. (Skip this if you don't like a quick bit of history, or if you're familiar with the legend of the ninth legion)

The year is 117 AD, and Briton/Provinca Britannia (modern England) is under Roman occupation. But that isn't enough, no no. Rome hungers for Caledonia (modern Scotland) and so dispatched the veteran Legio IX Hispania, the Ninth Legion, who were garrisoned in Briton, to seize the north lands (it was at this point that the IX Legion disappeared from all historical records. The rest (apart from the bit about Hadrian) is legend, not history), but once they crossed the border, the whole 5,000 elite soldiers mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again.
What happened to them? Nobody knows, but the general assumption is
Unfortunately for the Romans, this also meant that the legion's eagle standard, the symbol of their honour, was lost.
Which led to the myth of the curse of the legion, meaning Rome could never reform the legion unless the eagle was found.

Worse still, if the Caledoni were to get their hands on it, it might be enough motivation to lead to the unification of their tribes in a great and terrible war against the occupying Romans.

Things were in fact so bad that Hadrian, the recently appointed Emperor who was on his "world" tour, decided that the VI Legion ought to be shipped in to Britannia and the Great Wall of Briton ought to be built, spanning the breadth of the border with Caledonia. The purpose of this was to keep the northerners out because they were ginger. That or because they had battleaxes, I'm not sure which.

ANYWAY

Enough context. Where does Stokes come in?

Well, the year is now 125 AD and Stokes was given the choice to be pretty much anyone. So he chose to be a native, from the Brigantes tribe, serving as an auxiliary soldier in the VI Legion, in order to earn Roman citizenship. Which is odd, because when I asked him if he'd like to find the lost eagle in order to bring it back and restore the lost legion's honour, or to unite the Caledoni and lead a revolution against all Romans, he chose the latter. And you know what's also odd? His name, Derek Kneetaker. Lovely.

So anyway, after we determined all the important stats he'd have to keep track of, like beard length and personal hygiene, we got on with the story, which started with Derek/Stokes being given four weeks leave from service, in order to go and do his own thing.

His own thing turned out to be signing up for gladiator matches.

In which he did quite well, despite at one point basically having half his chest mashed up into soup.

When he was done with all that (and had a shave), he used his funds to buy a doctor slave and then headed southwest in search of a new town, to raise money for mercenaries to take north with him, past the wall, to find the eagle standard.

On his first night out, just as he was about to pop off to sleep, he was awoken by the sound of drumming and chanting in the woods nearby.

Which turned out to be a cult of about 15 druids and one other dude who was chatting to their leader.

The next day he reached the nearby town, and was having a look around when he found the home of the other dude who had been chatting to the druid leader. Stokes decided to stalk him for a bit and then pop into his house for a chat.

You see, Stokes had managed to work out, with a bit of help, that the guy was leading and uprising against the Romans, and decided to ask to join, as this fitted nicely with his overall goal for the RPG. Turns out you should never let Stokes ask you something though, as his idea of asking was stabbing the guy in the chest and knocking him to the floor, almost killing him.

[Sensitive readers should skip this next paragraph]
This woke his wife up, who tried to take Stokes out with a frying pan, but Stokes dodged, causing her to unintentionally smack her husband in the head, finishing him off. After failing to disarm her about five times, and concluding things had gone a bit too far (and got perhaps a bit too dark), Stokes decided to flee the town and head back to the legion fort to get back to service early.

So back at the fort of Eboracum (which eventually was to turn into the city of York), Stokes had a peaceful few months before a native uprising did indeed take place. Very quickly these rebels laid siege to the fort. Sallying forth to meet their foe, Stokes ran into five chariots. With some impressive javelin shots he and a couple of others managed to take them out, and hold their own against the dismounted riders while reinforcements came to lend a hand.

And the story so far ends with Stokes back in the gladiator arena trying to raise funds for his holiday expedition to the north, past the wall into the cold dread lands. He's just won a match against an extremely small person armed with a dagger and a shield twice his size.

And that's all for now folks... it should get a lot more interesting pretty quick, as Stokes can pretty much do whatever he likes, so we'll keep you updated.

Going on an adventure!

You're Going on an Adventure

Actually, you're returning from one...
You don't need your character sheets for now, just sort of go with it, we'll sort out all the technicalities a little later on.

Again you found yourself face to face with the foul fiend, but he is quick witted and powerful. You may have foiled his plan to use these Chaos Crystals for the time being, but he is sure to return. The Gnomes of this city know the most about them, as their captor forced them to study every aspect of them. The crystals are highly unstable, but with the aid of magic- of which many a Gnomic kin are accustomed in these realms- they find a relatively safe method to handle them. They decide the best thing to do is to find a way to destroy these crystals, for they cannot be used for any purpose of good. You are sworn to secrecy on the matter of the Chaos Crystals- unless the knowledge of these such artefacts will save the lives of those in danger of a result of the artefacts themselves.

You have spent much time in this mining town, recovering and attending meetings regarding the proceeds for the safe disposal of the crystals. The Gnomes and their alliances, (Dwarven Leaders of Bordorock from the Northern Mountains and High Elven Elders of Galderome included) yet, despite your rest, those of Elven blood grow weary and weaker by the day, suffering agonising headaches and trances filled with darkness and torment- the Galderomanic Elders are also affected, and they conclude such sickness comes from the evil of the crystals. As such, you decide to retire further East.

It is a dark morning and the clouds threaten heavy rain to come. Wizard Isaac's House is 4 days by foot/2 day by mount by means of the road. You estimate that you may make it there in 2 days by foot if you cut through the forest. Unfortunately, gnomes do not ride horses, they're simply not size compatible, they do, however, have a few ponies they would be willing to sell you. There is a general goods stall at the market, although they are low and limited in stock due to recent events and as such, prices are higher (x3). There is also an Alchemists shop, who shall give you a discount for saving his life. The town has 12 ponies used in the pits, though they are blind to the light, they are stronger than most, and they shall sell them at 25gp.

  • Trail Rations: 15sp per days worth, 1lb, 11 in stock
  • Oil: 3sp, 1lb, 6 pints in stock
  • Lantern, hooded: 21gp, 2lb, 1 in stock
  • Fire Wood: 3cp per days worth, 9 days worth in stock
  • Tent: 30gp, 20lb, sleeps 2, only 1 in stock
  • Hempen Rope: 3gp 50ft, 10lb, 1 in stock
  • Flask, empty: 9cp, 1 pint capasity, 1 1/2lb 8 in stock
  • Vial, empty: 3gp, 1/10lb, 17 in stock
  • Acid (in flask): 7gp, 1lb
  • Alchemists Fire (in flask): 15gp, 1lb
  • Antitoxin: 30gp, na/lb
  • Holy Water (in flask): 17gp, 1lb
  • Smokestick: 15gp, 1/2lb
  • Sunrod: 1gp, 1lb
  • Thunderstone: 20gp, 4lb
  • Tinderswig: 7sp, na/lb
  • Pit Pony: 25gp, 6 for sale

You are (mostly) all RIDICULOUSLY encumbered with your loads, and should be travelling at half your speed (Ehem, short-arsed Derek with chain mail and at least two heavy axes, yes?) but I am willing to let that slip for the time being if you buy a pony to carry the extra load so you can travel as forecast above until you reach Isaac's humble abode. Also the NPCs are all laughing at anyone lugging around a 10ft pole with them and, unless you have a bag of holding, you will suffer the consequences for carrying such a silly burden- you have been warned. You are trusted to keep account of your own finances and equipment for the time being, feel free to buy any of the items above to add to your equipment (but please make a note in the comments), and you may sell weapons and armour to the Dwarves for 2/3 price of the original value. You may also sell any of your Adventuring Gear to the Gnomic stall owner for full price.

How will you proceed? Discuss with your fellow adventurers below!

Sunday, 6 October 2013

So... hi!

Seeing as everyone else is posting, I probably should too.

What's happened since I last saw you all? Well, everyone moved into the new house, which is kinda lame because I enjoyed living on my own. Though it is a lot cheaper this way, I guess. We seem to be getting on fine apart from there always seems to be washing up in the sink. -sigh-

I got some bad news from the doctor. I apparently have the hearing of a 40 year old and it's going to get worse. Yay. Hopefully not quickly though so maybe hearing aids will be better by the time I need one.

On to better news! Uni is good so far. We've started anatomy class so we dissect cadavers every week. We also have to write lab reports every week (laaaaame) but the lectures are interesting. I'm even staying awake!

I joined the Assassins, which I intended to do last year but I never got round to it. I don't think I'll take part in many games because of my crappy bones, but I had fun at the social and met some cool people so I'll go to the weekly meets.

I'm gonna dump some art here. Not drawn much (as usual) but seeing as I put some art on here ages ago I might as well put some more recent stuff up.

That's my fantroll, a friend's fantroll as part of an art trade, and one of Bevan's OCs in a VERY unfinished painting (it's like a third done, I need to make everything more detailed and less plastic!)

I know you guys have seen most of these but we must think of our devoted fan base! (...is that guy from Germany still following us?)

I'm going to draw more this year no matter how hard the course is. Last year I didn't and well... bad things happened to my brain. I might as well be more honest. My therapist says to make time for myself so this year I will ^_^

Er... I think that's it.

Mina out.

P.S. I ate too much bruschetta and now everything hurts :L

BAKER'S BACK, BABY!

I haven't posted on this blog since March. Time flies, huh? XD

So, what have I been up to these last few weeks since returning to the 'pool? Short answer: Nothing. Long answer: Absolutely nothing. Basically, my life at University in Year 2 hasn't been that much different from my life at University in Year 1. Lectures still be making me sleep, labs still be a lot of writing up, and the Physics still be complex (but this year it's getting interesting, we do Electromagnetism an' Particle Physics 8D *ooh, ahh, is all sparkly glowy!*).

Saying that, the major difference everyone is noticing is the number of people on the course this year. Or rather, the lack of a number of people on the course this year. Last year's 300 (Leggett, feel free to insert a Leonidas reference here =P) has been drastically culled to about 150 from people failing exams, deciding to leave or being sacrificed to Cthulhu. Except the last one. Having come close to redoing a year with my own resits a few months ago, it's sobering to know how few people actually made the list.

On the more positive side, everyone has moved into the new house for this year pretty easily. The era of Halls is behind us, and we have entered the Year of the Student Digs! No more rules and regulations about when and how we have to clean the living room. No more wakeups at 3 in the morning when some drunk Fresher pulls the fire alarm. No more Residential Advisors to help out when the kitchen goes up in flame.

And it's fantastic. The house itself is 10 minutes away from campus, and most of that time is having to cross a dual carriageway. It's a bit small, but that just means there's less that can go wrong. I have the small, used-to-be-a-broom-cupboard room at the back, which is perfect for me as there's not as much to clean as the other bedrooms, and other than not being able to get a chair under the writing desk, the place couldn't be better. Hooray for having a place to sleep! =D

Aaaand, I think that's everything. If I keep to the same schedule for posting on here, I'll be writing the next post in May 2014, so see you guys then XD

Just to be clear, the kitchen hasn't burned to the ground.
Yet.

Here's hoping ;P

Jasmin Answers Questions

I never did do the questionnaire thingie, so here we go. And by the way, I'm using HTML to write this, just because it's actually easier than arguing with the formatting functions (or there lack of) on the composition interface.

The Questionnaire Thingie

What is your favourite word?
Fun word to say: Blob. It feels like it's falling out of your mouth as you say it.
Most inspirational word: Gothic. It whispers all kinds of images and settings, from Burton-esque characters to grand medieval architecture. It creates a mysterious, fog-veiled realm of Victorian adventure for me.

What is your least favourite word?
Rape. Just thinking the word makes me want to punch something.

What turns you on, creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
I think (instrumental) music has to be the most inspirational thing to get me going on a project. Sometimes I will sit and listed to music with my eves closed, studying every note, letting it carry me off to a far away place and paint pictures in my mind.

What turns you off?
Depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Nothing kills creativity, passion or the general ability to function as a normal human being like any of those.

What is your favourite curse word?
Crap. It sort of gets the message across without really being too offensive.

What sound or noise do you love?
The sound of pencil scratching away on paper. It's usually a good sign that I'm being productive.

What sound or noise do you hate?
Nails scratching denim. Goes through me- I mean, you can't even itch a scratch through denim anyway.

What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?
I wouldn't mind giving Piracy a go. Not that modern malarkey, I mean old school piracy, with a tricorn and galleon and swashbuckling.

What profession would you not like to do?
Anything that involves my soul being eternally bound to a desk, pen-pushing or such likes.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
The ball pool is over there.

Nerf Guns, Maths Tests and Troll Physics

Yo mah homies =P

Just finished the first week of uni which has been really weird getting back into a routine and trying to write again and instead creating a piece of modern art all over the page.

Le Monday
First actual lecture. It was fantastic to see troll physics on the first page of the powerpoint XD. I had one of those moments where in my head i was all like "OMG IMMA LEARN SOME SHIT AND BE PROFESSIONAL AND BE ABLE TO TO THINGS WITH OTHER THINGS" but I was actually more like =). However I was wrong... we did suvat which (for us is now called kinematics) and their derivatives, only doing 1 new thing which was putting it into vector form. The next lecture was the REAL first lecture for the Our Evolving Universe module which was basically a blast of stuff about stars and things and it was then when I thought holy shit this is gonna be hard... We had an intro talk... yet another talk on how to university. PLZ HALP I FORGOTTED HOW TO UNI! D=

Ze Tuesday
9:00 Surprise maths test... I've not mentioned yet that I have freshers flu and I'm more dribbly than porous mug. It wasn't too difficult since it was A-Level stuff... after that was another Our Evolving Universe lecture which I could've done without in my diseased state.

DRUM SOLO!

SHUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA-DUGGA

Las Wednesday
The best day of the week. 1 lecture and that's it... except for today when we had ANOTHER halp-how-uni-I-do? session... Was gonna go to NoDDSoc but was still too dribbly.

Das Thursday
The massive day... 4 lectures with 1 hour break for lunch. Physics lecture in the morning and the lecturer is stupidly fast... as in if you write something down, taking your eyes away for 5 seconds you've missed half the board's worth of stuff. We had another maths lecture with the same guy who gave the test on Tuesday (who is the most awesome guy ever) and he said "Have you had a lecture from Dr Boothe?.. Did shit get real?" and he was right... shit did get real with finding the equation for the electric field strength and its force at any distance x from a conductive metal rod (as the y axis) of length L at angle theta to the horizontal... yeah...
I also got drenched with rain going to HMV, hoping it wasn't going to get any worse... which it did. That night it was CARD GAEMZ and played yugioh till 11 at night XD

Los Friday
Imma have labs on fridays as of next week but was pretty boring today... one lecture on how some of the letters of suvat are changing to make it physics-y-er (which he was demonstrating parabola's with nerf guns. I cannot say how funny that lecture was) and basic pulley systems... That was more boring than Friends but still had more entertainment value.

I also have no voice due to freshers flu which is the cause of great hilarity...

Jasmin's Magical Adventure to Induction

Today was the day I finally start at uni, it's only inductions like, but at least it's something to keep me sane. I didn't actually sleep last night because I was feeling too creative and productive, and so decided to research Film Noir and the rolls of gender rolls/views of equality in the 1940-1950's for contextual research into the short stories by Roald Dahl I have to study, along with sketching and making notes on the text.

As I did not sleep, I was obviously up and ready on time, and set off early enough to walk to the college.... So I thought... I may have been a little geologically misplaced and orientally confused, but I was not by any means, lost, as 40 minutes later I arrived back exactly where I'd set off, back at home. And so I tried again, taking the bus as I would only be a few minutes late at this rate, so no need to panic (I was stressing out and frustrated and teary). Or at least, not until the driver kicks you off the bus as it has gone past your stop and reached it's terminal (at which point I nearly cried at the poor driver who had so kindly waited whilst I ran for the bus earlier)... And so yet again I tried, this time getting on the underground, eventually arriving at my first induction lecture an hour late. Never mind, I didn't miss anything exiting in the end, apparently.

After the induction, it was time for a lunch break, and that is where I made my very first friend, (and may have fallen slightly in love with him too). He was stood outside, flirting with the ladies when I first saw him, but he stopped to greet me with his big green eyes, and we sat in the sun for a while quite contently. His name is Muta, and he's a lovely big old cat.

My day felt oddly Ghibli-esque after that, especially wondering around Shepherd's Bush markets with all the wonderful, colourful stalls. It's a shame Muta didn't want to come, but he was happy enough in his patch of sunshine out by the college entrance, and he was there when I got back. I didn't really engage much with my classmates, instead I was consumed by ideas and inspiration of things I could make, and so continued with some more brain storming and character analysis- this continued for another 35 minutes before I decided that the tutor was unacceptably late. And my classmates agreed. We're not paying £9000 a year to be stud up by our tutors.

No trace of him/her was to be found, but we did get a run down of the IT induction from a technician, who kindly explained everything in just a minute, when it would have taken a mind-numbingly long hour to hear the same thing but dragged out with powerpoint presentations, so, all in all I suppose we did get the it induction to some degree and still got to go home early. Surely enough, Muta was swaggering across the street, wooing another group of young and impressionable girls, melting their hearts.

Stuff and Things for the Good of the Blog

Yo peeps. Imma split this post into 3 bits because things happen... Lol i have no idea what I'm doin'.

1. Music
I find it hard to write a post without mentioning music at some point and this one is no exception =P
The 3 week long playlist on spotify I mentioned in the last post has probably now become a 4 week long one... yes I have a months worth of music to listen to and on there there is only 1 album per band... that's a lot o' bands.

Anyway I have a lot to look forward to from various artists
Anubis Gate have a new album out early next year .
Dream Theater have just this week released their new album which I still haven't listened to.
Pyramaze have a new album out at some point either nearer Christmas or early next year
Headspace have a new album out early next year
Bad Salad have a new EP out early next year
Epica have their 10th anniversary live performance coming out on 3 DVDs and 2 CDs as a massive box.

I've also recently discovered the eBay of CDs and Vinyls, Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/
If it exists, someone will either have it on sale or it will have once been sold on there. My bro has bought some almost extinct Black Metal CDs from there for ridiculously cheap prices and I've just bought some album promos for less than £10 each and they're friggin gold dust. You MUST check this but be careful of shipping prices, they caught me out and ended up paying an extra £10 for some bits.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Uni
FRESHERS WEEK YAAAAAY

Monday was the "Welcome to Sheffield. Feel free to explore as many pubs as you can tonight" talk and a pointless talk on modules because I don't get a choice doing Astro. I still don't know who the other peeps are on my course because they haven't dumped us all together in a room yet, but I'm sure they'll all begin to love me soon =P

Then there's the guy with the Dream Theater shirt I saw who's doing physics... he shall be mine...

I've got a Sheff Uni hoodie now too so I'm an official student. The card means nothing. It's all about the hoodie ;)

Anyway, Tuesday was interesting cos all I did (except me piano lesson) was go to the wargames society meet... funneh guyzzz. I took down some models cos I thought that not bringing models was like not bringing my deck to  Yu-Gi-Oh tournament. After being there 5 mins one of the high authority peeps let me join in the game they were about to start. As Mr Leggett knows very well I have a metaphorical boner for Terminators (big guys in big armour with big weapons that never frikkin die) and naturally I used some of them and some bikes as support too... The game starts and the evil ones realise theyve put the best guys at the front and the weakest at the back and the game rules state you have to attack the nearest model in a unit... do the Chaos Lord was driven over by bikers after being shot up a treat. Terminators were in reserve waiting to be beamed in from orbit Star Trek style. All the while I keep getting nice comments from random strangers looking at my models which was nice =3
Anyway back to the game; two of the guys offer a duel for fun and decide to pit the Terminators one of my ally's was using against the evil ones' grots (goblins with pistols basically), of which took a few turns to get going. In the mean time I was down to 1 biker and was about be be assaulted by Howling Banshees (they dance the dance of death and are like ninjas with two swords but all futuristic like) who are scary good in combat. I get my free shot off because they assaulted me and kill 1. He gets 24 chances to hit, then 8 chances to hit, resulting in 1 wound, killing the biker. I so wanted to survive that attack XD
Then the Terminators rain down and do bugger all for the first turn, only to be killed next turn by me rolling 5 ones out of 6 dice -_- never again... The big thing about this is not the shitty roll but that they were killed by the most gruntyest of grunts of gruntytown... even more gruntyer then guardsmen and lets be honest theyre pretty grunty. They were killed by Eldar Guardians. They literally punched them to death...
Dire losses aside, the other lot of my Terminators kill entire units without breaking a sweat... then DIE TO THE SAME BLOODY UNIT OF GUARDIANS!!! They deserved a promotion after that game.
Sadly the game had to be cut short there because we were already 45 minutes over the allotted time XD
Met all the people who run the soc and got a Blood Bowl friend too.

Wednesday was stressful... All I wanted to do was go and get registered but nothing is ever that easy is it?
I got up, got ready and then couldn't find any keys, not even mine. After 10 mins of frantic searching I find them and get going. I turn up at registration 10 mins early and hang around for a bit before going in, queue for about half an hour then get turned away because I didn't have my passport... Id've put money on it that they said that only international students needed it. I still don't understand why because they have me on the system with a picture of me... So I ring my bro who luckily hasn't gone to his lectures yet and is still at home, so I get him to find it and chuck it to me as his bus goes past. While I'm waiting for him, 3 hipsters pass me and wow they were the most classic yet extreme hipsters I've ever seen. The word faggot didn't do them justice, so I just thought they must be doing psychology. Anyway so my bro hands me me passport over the bus and I go back to register and it all goes smoothly. Then the worst part... HMV DIDN'T HAVE ANY ALBUMS I WANTED DX

I got my timetable too today so for those of you who want to know, I have stuff at these times:
Monday 11:00 - 12:00 and 17:00 - 18:00
Tuasday 9:00 - 10:00 and 16:00 - 18:00
Wednesday 11:00 - 12:00
Thursday 11:00 - 16:00
Friday 10:00 - 13:00
I'ts nice that I only have to get up early on Tuesdays =P

Thursday was the activities fair where we sign up to the societies. I am now a member of:
Minecraft Soc
Not Only D&D Soc
Board Game Soc
Card Game Soc
Collectible Card Game Soc
PokeSoc
RockSoc (Which is pretty shit so will drop it)
PhySoc
Wargames Soc

That afternoon I wanted to go to the card gaming thing but the booklet that it was advertised in said tickets were £3. That wasn't the problem... the problem was that the booklet said for some other events that you had to pre book, so I assumed the £3 tickets were to buy on the door... I was wrong... they had to be pre booked too... so I got there and was immediately turned away. Fun.

Friday I had the departmental talks about physics telling us about how not to fail, why failing is bad and how big and scary the books are. They said that in the £9000 fees, our textbooks are bought for us so we get to keep them forever =3. (Suck it up Baker 'n' Jake XD).

There was a guy there and he had a Tool shirt... like the Dream Theater guy on Monday, he shall also be mine... He looks like he's in his 30s tho...

After those we had a PhySoc gathering in the union bar (Bar One) and that was a weird experience. Everyone sitting round a table with a beer or cider and talking about how much 'fun' they have while they're drunk. So I was just sitting there thinking, in the words of Bill Bailey, ...Die...Die you smug bastards... It's really weird wanting to join in but then don't because you feel you have a better life choice than them...
Thats a bit harsh Tom...
It's true though Tom...
True, but you could've put it nicer...
Nobody needs to know... And stop talking to yourself
Ok Tom...

...

Yes so that was a strange experience but I did chat to some peeps that sadly do binge but are genuinely nice guys... outside the pub...

So overall for freshers... I've played 1 game of Warhammer all week... sounds a bit bad now I've put it that way, but there wasn't really anything else I wanted to do, except for archery which I did want to go to, but then I saw that they were using the Olympic-style bows with the counter-balances and all that jazz which to me aint archery. I think I'll start fitting in a bit better when we get into lectures and lab sessions.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. My RPG

OH... MY... GLOB
I'ts turned out 100 times better than I ever expected but I still haven't had the courage to do the feats yet XD
For those who haven't played it yet, its based on percentages for everything. Like in D&D you roll a D20 for everything, In this you roll a D100 and depending on how well you succeed depends on how effective your action is. The lower the roll on the D100, the better the result. For example if you're slapping a goblin (a favorite pastime of mine), you have a base skill with the weapon you're using and a strength modifier and there's the armour value of the goblin. Say the armour gives a 50% chance to hit. To that 50 you add your strength mod and the weapon mod to get a final hit chance. Lets say that chance ends up as 70%. You now roll the D100 and roll equal to or lower than the 70%. Each weapon do a specific die of damage for every so many % you succeeded by. Say you roll 50 and your weapon does "1D8 per 10% + 1". That means that against that hit chance of 70% you dealt 3D8 damage (difference of 20%,  + 1. The +1 is so that if you roll equal to the value you still do some damage). This means that criticals are easier to score against less armoured enemies but the only real problem is that it's delicate. 10% difference has made major differences to the outcomes of things so I need to be careful about the feat abilities. We don't want any wizards being tanks like they can be in D&D.
The steampunky bit of this is fun. I hope peeps like flamethrowers, tesla weapons and steam powered exo-skeletons and mechs because that's what there's gonna be. If anyone wants the rules for this I can give ya them and if peeps are ready we can do another beta testing sesh soooooon!

So there you go, an update of my life! You should feel privileged =P

So, We Are NOT Bored, we meet again...

I think it'd be great to keep this blog up! We're all back off to uni/starting uni/starting gap years, we'll all have lots to tell, and it'll help us keep in touch!

I'll kick it off...

My gap year at the moment is with my local Church as a youth work trainee, which involves... youth work! And also studying the Bible, learning to give talks and trying to build my character. All of which I'm really enjoying.

The youth work is really interesting, there's four main things that I help at, two Bible study things (one just with y9s, the other with y7-y9) and two youth club things (one y3-y6, the other y7-y9). So mostly I'm working with people aged 11-14, which is the age group that I least know how to engage with! So that's challenging, but that makes it more... interesting! I'm getting much better with them quite quickly, though, which is good. Really interesting thing happened in a small group at the y3-y6 club, obviously I can't give details, but two of the kids in my group were absolutely hyper, and wouldn't stop messing around (in a bad way!), it makes you realise that you don't actually have any real control over them, your authority is superficial (save for being able to ban them from coming back, but we don't want to do that!). A lot of keeping kids behaving (in a good way!) can be an illusion act, a delicate balance between looking powerful and in charge, and being personal and fun. It was a little scary at the time, but enlightening in the long run. If any of you get involved in youth/children's work or teaching, remember that!

For the Bible side of things, I've been looking into how the Old and New Testament God is the same, a Trinity, relational God throughout, and how the Bible (looking at the OT bits mostly, though) provides evidence for this. Of course, I already believed they were the same, but it's fascinating looking at it in depth, the more I learn the more interesting it gets. Tomorrow I start a weekly thing teaching me to give talks, which will involve us (the trainees) having to present talks on passages to the rest of the church staff, which will be nerve-racking, but I hope to get a lot out of it, especially as I really have no idea where I'd start with a talk. We'll also be aiming them at the age groups we work with, so I'll be doing ages "11-14, which is the age group that I least know how to engage with!"... "but that makes it more... interesting"... :P

Stokes, as we all know, started work on his new Steampunk RPG, which is coming along really well. (We should all have another skype/in person game of that again!) I'm really impressed with how he sorted out guns to work with it, without making it insanely complicated. Keep that up, Stokesman.

Also, I broke my supervisor's wedding present wineglass... not a great start (;

Yet another of Stokes' music based posts =P

I can already feel the Butthurt from baker... =P
SO! I was writing an essay Sunday night and thought and really really couldn't be arsed with it... SO! I decided to distract myself by making some categories and listing my favorite tracks from those categories for the good of the blog. AND LOOK! I've even found you videos... just remember to put them to HD or 720p =P

So without further ado here are the categories!

1 The "STOKES! You like that!?!?" Category

3 The "AWESOME" Category
4 The "Prog Favorites" Category

I first heard this whilst I was half asleep and it woke me up... I had no idea who or what it was but she's one of the few singers who can sing and not have to use autotune or a wub wub machine. Also its prettyful =3

Honorable Mention: Laid to Rest - Lamb of God http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7yK4zHhgU0 < yet another generic video

Category 2: "OMG ;-; so beautiful!"
These are the tracks that slapped me in the face with prettyfullness for one reason or the other. I've posted the winner of this before so you may be able to guess... if you pay any attention to my posts XD

Category 3: "AWESOME"
The title states it... These are the most awesome tracks I've heard. There are quite a lot that overlap with other categories and I wanted to only mention each track once so there had to be some decisions made ._.

No. 5: Asylum - Disturbed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K9jBL2syJ8

No. 4: Room 4 Fragments - Dreyelands THIS ISNT ON YOUTUBE!!!! It makes me sad that such a good band is so unheard of =(. The song itself mixes with the lyrics and creates a slightly disturbing feel. It's about someone who hears the voice of God, but the music is almost happy... quite wierd...

No. 3: Le Onde - Ludovico Einaudi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie951V1yd4A
Ive still not found anyone more unique than Enaudi. Anyone who says he's bad or doesn't like it is an uncultured urchin xD

My turn!

Hey! I realise its a bit late, but I thought I'd give the questionnaire a go too! (good idea to keep the blog going Baker :))

1) What is your favourite word?
Flourish! sounds cool and I like the meaning..
Or, do Croatian words count? I like the word "zglob" so fun to say! it means "wrist" or "joint".

2)What is your least favourite word?
ooze - it both looks and sounds strange.

3)What turns you on, creatively, spiritually emotionally?
Hmm, I'll have to agree with Matt, in that I don't much like the wording of this question but never mind. I love drawing and sketching when you properly get into it and forget everything else, great music and good peeps and conversations. :D

4)What turns you off?
Spitting. just... BLEEUURRRGHH. No.

5) What is your favourite curse word?
Poo. Classic! :D

6) What sound or noise do you love?
Crickets

7) What sound or noise do you hate?
When you scratch the type of plasticy stuff that raincoats are made from.

8) What profession other than your own, would you like to attempt?
Working at Weta workshop on the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit! Or working on a film.

9) What profession would you not like to do?
Those people who check all the tickets on the tram, or a doctor, or working in a morgue.

10) If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
"Frisbee tiiimmmeee!" :D Epic!

Keep the blog going guys! :) x

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

Pivot questions tiem!

1. What is your favorite word?

How is this a question when there are words like Armageddon, Behemoth, Goliath and Anatodieaphobia    (or however the hell you spell it)

2. What is your least favorite word?

Any word that the Americans shoved a 'z' in place of the 's'.

3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Jake... O_O loljks =P
I think music definitely fits all those categories =P

4. What turns you off?

   Society...

5. What is your favorite curse?

In broad yorkshire "Don't be a bastard!"

6. What noise do you love?

The sound of a hydraulic piston-driven drawer closing... that '.......tt' awwww yeah!!

7. What noise do you hate?

Justin Beiber... followed closely by dubstep

8. What profession would you like to have?

Strangely a story writer of some description, prolly for games n stuff... that or be in the most awesome prog metal band of all time =P

9. What profession would you not like to have?

Professional sportsman... as much as I like certain sports, I like free time =P

10. If heaven exists, what would you like God to say to you at the gates?

Because heaven is a figment of imagination to give the false impression of an illogical realm created to fulfill the needs of an ancient belief, God would have to say "da fuq is wrong with you? '_."

The Pivot Questionnaire

Yeah, I noticed the stagnation too, but I didn't want to write something because I was the last person that posted, and two posts in a row seemed wrong to me. I guess January exams (and my three month long coursework nightmare) distracted people.

  1. What is your favourite word? - Bethesda, for all the awesomeness.
  2. What is your least favourite word? - It has to be the "patriarchy" I hear enough of that on tumblr, and it drives me insane -.-
  3. What turns you on, creatively, spiritually or emotionally? - I like drawing people, figures, facial expressions and stuff like that.
  4. What turns you off? - Hipsters and sheep. Like something simply because you like it. Form your own opinions, people! This goes for politics too, not just pop culture.
  5. What is your favourite curse word? - Bollocks.
  6. What sound or noise do you love? - An orchestra building and building and building...
  7. What sound or noise do you hate? - When the knife or fork scrapes across the plate and squeaks :/
  8. What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt? - Illustrator, animator, concept artist or something like that.
  9. What profession would you not like to do? - Nurse, just no. I'm not caring enough to deal with all that.
  10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? – "You can be anything you want to be now. You can have the body you want and the people you love around you. I'll leave you in peace. Enjoy."
Ok, so I'm considering writing a very serious post soon. Would people want that or shall I keep it more fun?

The Pivot Questionnaire

Hey guys, I've noticed that no-one has posted anything since November. That's a whole 4 months, seems we're getting a tiiiny bit behind XD

So, to try to kickstart us up again, I've decided that, before the end of the month, we each need to do something to get back in the game... er, blog. And having thought long and hard for about 5 minutes, I thought that it would be interesting for everyone to have a go at answering the Pivot Questionnaire.

If you have no idea what that is, there's an American TV show called "Inside the Actors Studio", where actors get interviewed at the Actors Studio Drama School in New York. At the end of every interview they're asked this set of questions, which were originally used by a French interviewer called Bernard Pivot on one of his shows. It's quite an interesting set, so I thought I'd give it a go.

1.       What is your favourite word?Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. Purely for the look on someone’s face when they get diagnosed with it.

2.       What is your least favourite word? – Won’t, it makes no sense to me that it’s an abbreviation of ‘will not’.

3.       What turns you on, creatively, spiritually or emotionally? – Talking to myself. If I’m writing something, like a novel or a script, I always talk through the dialogue by myself to make sure it sounds like a real conversation. Somehow that became a thing I do.
     ... I’m not crazy.

4.       What turns you off? – Anything on MTV that isn’t music, I just shut down when I see it. And sometimes the music on there too.

5.       What is your favourite curse word? – A broad Yorkshire “Fook off”.

6.       What sound or noise do you love? – Any noise that breaks absolute silence.

7.       What sound or noise do you hate? – Absolute silence.

8.       What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt? – Time traveller. ’nuff said.

9.       What profession would you not like to do? – Game tester. Not reviewer or player, but the guy who jumps in the same spot 5000 times to see if the game glitches. I would never want to grow to hate video games.

10.   If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? – We have everything set up like you wanted, go nuts.

Well, at least that broke the 4-month blog-post famine =P
